Gov Uy commends AFP, PNP for capture of rebel leader

Davao De Oro Governor Jayvee Tyron L. Uy commends the joint effort of the Armed Forces of the Philippines and the Philippine National Police that led to the arrest of NPA rebel leader ElizaldeCanete also known as KaJinggo last May 12, 2014 after getting wounded in an armed clash in Kitaotao, Bukidnon. The rebel leader is currently confined in a hospital in Bukidnon.

Maj Ezra Balagtey, Eastern Mindanao Command Spokesperson, said that Canete succeeded LeoncioPitao also known as Commander Parago after the latter was killed in an encounter in Paquibato District, Davao City. Canete leads the PulangBagani Company I Brigade of the New People’s Army.

Canete was blamed for series of attacks such as the burning of Lapanday Foods Corporation. He was also involved in similar NPA-perpetrated atrocities in Davao De Oro and Agusan Del Sur.

In 2010, Canete was captured after getting wounded in a clash in Laak, Davao De Oro but managed to post bail in 2013.

Gov. Uy, on his end, commended the AFP and PNP for their strengthened resolve to end insurgency in Davao Region.

“I welcome this development. I am certain that his arrest will pave way for this prosecution and eventually, the granting of justice to all the victims of his atrocities. I thank the PNP and the AFP for their hard work and perseverance”, the young governor said.

Since the intensified efforts of AFP and PNP, there are 1, 134 regular NPA, 587 milisyangbayan and 315 sangayngpartido members who surrendered and went back to the folds of law.

He also encouraged the newly elected barangay officials to support the government’s anti-insurgency efforts.

“Barangay is the unit of the government that truly understands the situation in the grassroots. I encourage the newly elected barangay officials to actively support the government’s efforts against insurgency as it is their duties as duly elected authorities. We are doing our very best to finally secure peace and prosperity for all”, the governor said. (ajc//id comval)
